Emotional Freedom Technique Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), or tapping, is a self-help mind-body therapy that involves tapping on acupressure points on the face and body while focusing on negative emotions, thoughts, or physical pain to help reduce their intensity. It's rooted in energy psychology and combines elements of cognitive therapy, exposure, and somatic stimulation. The goal is to achieve emotional balance and relieve symptoms of stress, anxiety, and trauma. How EFT Tapping Works 1. Identify the Issue: Choose a specific emotional or physical issue you want to address and rate its intensity on a scale of 0 to 10, where 10 is the maximum distress. 2. Formulate a "Setup Phrase": Create a statement that acknowledges the issue, such as "Even though I have this [problem], I deeply and completely accept myself". 3. Tapping Sequence: Karate Chop: While repeating the setup phrase, tap on the fleshy part of the hand on the "karate chop" point (side of the hand, below the pinky). Main Points: Gently tap each of the following points 5-7 times with your fingertips while focusing on your problem: EB (Eyebrow): The beginning of your eyebrow. SE (Side of Eye): On the bone at the outside corner of the eye. UE (Under Eye): On the bone under the eye, below the pupil. UN (Under Nose): The point between the nose and the upper lip. CH (Chin): Halfway between the lower lip and the chin. CB (Collarbone): At the beginning of the collarbone. UA (Under Arm): On the side of the body, about 4 inches below the armpit. TOH (Top of Head): Directly in the center of the top of your head. 4. Test the Intensity: After tapping, re-rate the intensity of your issue on the 0-10 scale to see if it has reduced. 5. Repeat: Continue the process, possibly with variations of your setup phrase, until the intensity of the issue reaches 0 or plateaus. Benefits of EFT Tapping Reduces stress, anxiety, and symptoms of burnout. Helps to lessen the emotional intensity of traumatic memories. Can lead to a lower heart rate and blood pressure. Provides a simple, non-invasive self-help tool for mental and emotional well-being.
